Professor Ajay Aggarwal

Professor - Cancer Services and Systems Research

United Kingdom

I am a Professor of Cancer Services and Systems Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and a Consultant Clinical Oncologist (specialising in the delivery of radiation and systemic cancer therapies) at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust, London.

My academic work focuses on cancer policy, performance assessment of cancer care, and Global Health. I have received grants from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Wellcome Trust, and UKRI to lead mixed methods research in this area with a particular focus on use of large clinical administrative datasets to answer important applied clinical and policy focused questions.

Since 2023 I have been the Clinical Director of the ten national cancer audits in England and Wales (NATCAN), which is one of the largest cancer quality assurance and improvement programs in the world. I have been the recipient of two research fellowship awards from the NIHR in 2014 and 2020 and am the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cancer Policy.

My research has also contributed significantly to national and international policy discussion around the affordability of cancer care and the value of new technologies in cancer medicine which has influenced directly the WHO Cancer Drug Pricing and Benefits Taskforces. As co-chair of the Health Economics in Radiation Oncology (HERO) group within ESTRO (European Society for Radiation Oncology), I am leading the value-based health care initiative and a member of ESTRO’s Scientific Council.

As well as leading global health projects, I have undertaken Consultancy work for the World Health Organisation and International Atomic Energy Agency. I am the Chief Investigator of the US NIH funded ARCHERY study, the first prospective international multicentre trial across India, Jordan, Malaysia and South Africa evaluating the role of AI in the delivery of radiotherapy treatment.

I graduated from Guy’s, Kings’ & St Thomas’ Medical school having attained a BSc in Management at Imperial College London. I have an MSc in the Science of Cancer from The Institute of Cancer Research and an MSc in Health, Population and Society from The London School of Economics. I completed my PhD in Health Services and Policy Research at LSHTM.
